RE: Magnetite Nanocrystals |
There was nothing abouth magnetic field of the Earth in the question (but incorrect M^2). Knowing magnetic moment, you can easily calculate magnetic energy. I am sorry, but, please first read the papers I provided. In bugs, individual nanocrystals are self-assembled in chains forming a long compass needle for which k_BT is small. We know how to split the chains. |

I checked this page: http://www.cmpgroup.ameslab.gov/supermaglab/bugs.html These bugs are amazing!! They have whiskers too. And they make nice big chains of crystals. I can believe that such chains are big-enough so that magnetic field of the earth would orient them. But...one can easily capture these bugs with a small magnet, right?

One question is left unanswered though: when these cells divide, what happens to the magnetic nano-particles? |

| They typically have more than one magnetosome chain, so they divide them and when they grow make new ones (this depends on a particular strain). |

| yes, the bugs are amazing and people "fish" them in lakes and seas with magnets. The "whiskers" are called flaggela - they are used to actually move(swim) along the field lines. |

RE: Magnetite Nanocrystals |
interesting...I have a strong magnet, will try to fish in Lae of the Woods then. Do you think there are some magnetic bugs there? How about Hommer lake> |
